Sketch Tuesdays @ Minna Gallery SF

Last week my mom sent me an article from SF Gate that talked about different art events around the city. The writer mentioned a monthly event called Sketch Tuesdays where different artists come and sketch together, and the public can participate and purchase the sketches for a small fee. From the photos it looks like a great event. I will definitely be participating in May!

Raging at the Bull: Occupy Wall Street Posters From Occuprint

The first poster in this series that I saw was the above image featuring the bull. I was really drawn to the  texture in the poster, I love when posters look like they were made with a traditional medium, like ink. The colors, drawing, and composition of the poster are also working really well. Basically, I was really drawn to the poster. So drawn in fact that I clicked the link to the original article and found many more awesome posters. Above are some of my favorites - more texture and typography - but if you are interested in the artwork and want to read about Occuprint I highly suggest jumping to over to the original article on wired.

p.s. Happy almost Friday!

Wardrobe Wednesday: Industry of One

Industry of One: Grace

I came upon Industry of One via sfgirlbybay. The site is a "periodical on the wears of work" created by Adam Patrick Jones and Rachel Brown. They explore people's work outfits and how what they do influences what they wear. Along with a bunch of beautiful images (as well as a beautiful site) they have interesting interviews of each subject.

I had time to read a couple and really enjoyed the one on Katie Hanson, a managing editor at a book publishing firm. As a person just beginning my career "journey" it was fun to read about where Katie began and where she is now. The outfits are also lovely!

If you feel like your career has shaped your outfits you can submit a few pictures and a paragraph about yourself. You may end up being featured!

It All Started With A Stove

As I walked through a stove filled room I saw it, across the room stood a red stove. Okay, so it didn't happen exactly like this. I mean I don't live in a romantic comedy where my costar is a stove, but I was smitten. In reality I went stove and fridge shopping with Brian and my mom and had a fit over a different red stove. Never thinking they would go with it, I was actually convinced a guhauff type of noise would come out of someone's mouth, I pointed at the red preparing for the worst. But the opposite happened, both of them thought it was really awesome, and the rest is history.

Short story really long, we ended up decorating the entire kitchen based on the red stove. The red in the stove is a little bit darker than the picture above. It is called apple red. In case you couldn't tell I am super excited about this decision. Thanks family for supporting my crazy love for red!

Next I will reveal how I fell in love with a fridge. Bet you didn't realize one person could love so many appliances.

My Recent Pins: Cats, Skirts, and Moons Oh My!

1/2/3/4/5

Since I spend so much time on Pinterest I thought I would start a new series of posts that catalogue some of my recent favorite pins. So here are a few, man am I addicted to that site, that I am very fond of. Doesn't that beet sandwich look delicious? A bright yellow cup, summer skirts, a moon infographic, and a cat dressed in a costume in the woods. These pins are just too good to be true.

Also, I'm super excited because I just purchased Jessica Hische's awesome font Buttermilk (see Pins above for an example). I'm so excited!

Wardrobe Wednesday: Lucy Laucht

I recently stumbled across Lucy's blog via Pinterest. I love all of her outfits. Each one is an unique twist on classic style. The thing I admire most about her outfits is the ease in which she pairs a great vintage skirt with a basic t-shirt. As strange as it is, I also love that she features her one great leather bag in a majority of her posts. I don't know about you, but I am too lazy to change purses every day. It makes her seem more approachable, despite her crazy amazing New York fashion.

If you love to see a girl work a great skirt and tee I highly suggest you pop over to Lucy's blog.

A Post In Which I Have a Crisis of Faith

1

Lately I have felt a little bit, well, blah. The source of my blahness, as I am now calling it, comes from a new uncertainty about my career path. You see, I have always wanted to be a designer, and the path to this designership (I'm super into making up words today) always seemed really clear. Get good grades in school, get into college, graduate from college, get awesome job. Obviously this has been majorly simplified, but you get the gist.

But lately this career path isn't making as much sense. For the last six months I have been working at the San Jose Airport doing exactly what, after college was over, I was sure I wanted. Now this job is not by any means perfect. I'm working on a PC for one, my boss, who is in charge of everything I do stumbled into the world of design twenty something years ago, is actually and engineer, and didn't even know design could be a major. But I took the job because I thought that it would be a great stepping stone to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Think again my friend. Turns out, that even though I love sitting on my ass and watching tv, I hate sitting at work all day. I hate staring at a screen for eight hours straight. And this realization has put me into a bit of a tail spin. This is what designers do, this is what I did all through college and loved it, this was going to be my life. But I can't do it. I want to move, run around town, have flexible work hours, and most of all I want to want to go to work.

So, now what do I do? How do you bounce back after realizing what you thought you wanted since you were twelve isn't really what you wanted? Open a coffee store, a design studio, a clothing store? My initial thought is retail, since it is in my blood, but I still love design and really want to have it in my life. But in what capacity? Clearly, I could use a little help.

Why Don't We Experiment?

I have been really into experimental type recently and it is nice to see alternative titles being used on a magazine as big as Esquire. I love when I can see designers having fun, while using a traditional medium, such as the magazine.

Happy Easter everyone! This year this day means brunch with Brian's family, and cheap, but delicious, half-priced chocolate from Target tomorrow. What does this day mean to you?

p.s. I have been awful at blogging lately, my apologies. I was so exhausted last week, but I have some new things to share about the house, so hopefully I'll be better next week...
