Happy Friday (Thursday)!

I'm super giddy right now because I don't have work tomorrow so today is my Friday (thank you Cesar Chavez)! I love this print from Jamie Shelmen on Etsy. I think I may need to purchase it once I move into my new home.

Wardrobe Wednesday: Coats, Coats, Coats

1/2/3/4

It has been rainy here in the bay area for the last couple weeks (I am not complaining, we needed rain badly), and with all of this rain my mind has been on coats. Living in San Francisco demands layers during all seasons and having different coats that cater to each kind of day and the special weather it brings has become a staple for me. I'm currently looking for a good trench coat, and have been secretly craving a leather jacket for the last year. Hopefully my secret is safe with you...

And It All Fell Down

With the rain came the demolition. I guess it pays to only have work that needs to be done inside sometimes. They demo'd the house in record time and have already started building new walls and floors (photos to come).

Most of my time away from work these days is spent discussing appliances, tiles, and other fixtures. To some it may seem bothersome, but to me it is very exciting. My mom and I are still doing most of the designing, and Brian helps when he isn't buried in school work, but we did hire a designer name Leslie to help us make some decisions and get the best products. She sold us when her website had a Seinfield quote - also her initials spell lab, cool right?

It has been really fun watching the house come together. It is one thing to see it on paper and another to see it happening. I am giddy with excitement.

p.s. I must warn you that an entire post on appliances is coming up. That is right, I've become infatuated with an appliance guys...

Eating Off the Grid

Brian and I stumbled upon one of the first Off the Grid food truck events of the season (they close down during the winter) on Thursday night. We were on our way to a restaurant in the Haight when we saw the trucks circled together, and after I did some, lets call it enthusiastic jumping and clapping in the car, we decided to forgo the restaurant and enjoy the food trucks.

I have been a big fan of The Chairman food truck since I first encountered Off the Grid with Brian last November. They sell the most amazing baked and steamed buns and I visit them whenever possible, and even called Brian when I saw them on the freeway once. Yes, I am that obsessed. Check them out!

We also tried food from a truck I had never seen before called Southern Sandwich Co. that was delicious. We had a traditional pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw that was the most authentic pulled pork I had enjoyed since being in the South.

I have an obsession with Off the Grid and food trucks in general. I have a secret dream to have them cater my wedding. A girl can wish.

Wardrobe Wednesday: Kate Ermilio

1

I'm absolutely in love with the spring colors and feminine silhouettes from the Kate Ermilio Spring/Summer 2012 collection. I would happily wear all of these clothes everyday, even if it means I would be way overdressed.

I also adore the hair and makeup. I must learn how to do a cat eye on myself (or somehow convince Brian to learn, haha)

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! I'm pretty sure this is my favorite family portrait ever. I hope you have a lovely weekend full of records, guitars, and cute stripes.

This Post Brought to You by the Run in My Stockings

1/2/3

This morning I got to work and quickly realized that I had a large run in my stockings. Taking them off wasn't an option due to my unkempt legs, so I sucked it up and hoped that it wouldn't be that noticeable (I think it might have been. Hopefully my polk-a-dot dress was distracting enough). Basically what this all comes down to is that the thing I am most excited for in the new house is my new custom closet (yes I love clothes and shoes and had a Barbie dream house as a child).

You see, at the moment I get dressed in the dark every morning because Brian often goes to bed at 4 am because of school and I get up 5 am to go to work. The boy deserves to sleep longer than and hour, so I don't turn on the light.

Now, I'm proud to say that this has only driven me to make a few fashion mistakes. Realizing I put my button down shirt on inside out and backwards was kind of embarrassing, perhaps more than the darkness was to blame for this one. Since this is the first time I will ever get to build my closet from the ground up I have been looking at a lot pictures to decide how to organize it.

One idea that I had, and got really excited about, was to eliminate my dresser so that all of my clothes were either hanging or stacked in a cubby. I really like this idea because I have found that when I can see all of my clothing I am much more likely to wear it and to notice when I no longer need a piece of clothing in my closet.

I've really enjoyed some of the ideas in the above images. My favorite is the second image, because I like how the cubby separates the two halves – Brian's clothes have to fit in too. I bet you never knew someone could think about there closet so much. Just you wait. I'm sure there will be more to come...

I Think I Went to Heaven

1

Last week I was reading The Bold Italic and came across an article about a new business in Cole Valley called The Ice Cream Bar. The Ice Cream Bar is a throw back to the old soda fountain. They are bringing back the soda jerk, phosphates, and handmade organic drink ingredients. Now, before I go any further I must admit that anything that mentions ice cream usually intrigues me, but I even without my ice cream fogged glasses on I could tell this place was special.

On Saturday evening Brian and I decide to visit the soda fountain. For one we went an hour before closing and it was packed with people old and young. The workers were all dressed like they came out of the 1950s, but not in a cheesy way, and they were all very well informed. But the most important part is that the ice cream and drinks were amazing.

Brian was really interested in the soda fountain part so we decided to try an old-fashioned milkshake first called the Too Good to be True. An old-fashion milkshake is shaken with milk, egg, and ice and is much lighter than a "normal" milkshake. The one we tried had rye-based butterscotch syrup, egg, milk, malted cream, and blackstrap molasses. It was delicious. We also tried a fresh fruit-based soda called A Lover's Game that had whole raspberries, chocolate, and soda in it. And last but not least, we tried a traditional banana split, that wasn't so traditional – it had sour cherry ice cream with whole cherries, milk chocolate ice cream, creamy vanilla ice cream, caramelized bananas, covered in different homemade sauces, whipped cream, and nuts.

Okay, now that I have sufficiently drooled all over my keyboard I'm going to stop and leave you with this last piece of advice. Visit the Ice Cream Bar.

Happy Friday!

At the moment this cartoon describes my week and my job (I design signage for an airport). All I can say is thank god it is Friday. So without further ado, happy Friday everyone!

P.S. I LOVE the Far Side cartoons by Gary Larson. In my opinion he has the greatest sense of humor. Nobody makes me laugh with such few words.

Website Lust Leads to Website Love

1/2

I have been trying to create my portfolio for a year now. And while I haven't been successful so far, though I'm actually getting closer, I have come into contact with some amazing websites/portfolios while looking for inspiration. These are two of my favorites from the last week.

Mignon Kitchen: This site is mostly filled with things to buy for your kitchen. From beautiful housewares to yummy looking food I think you could find just about anything you could possibly want on this site. While I could probably buy everything on this site and be very happy I have to admit my favorite page is called "Bake With Love," because it is filled with tips for happier baking, and nothing is better for the kitchen than a happy baker!

Lab Partners: A husband and wife team based in Oakland, Lab Partners, focuses on geometric illustrations filled with bright colors and a lot of whimsy. They mostly do print work but recently worked on the exhibit design for the California Academy of Sciences. Check out there shop and blog for more information.
